From the Newsroom

NC9 Raw

Hi Everyone!  On Monday, October 29th, we are going to have a little fun.  While the main newscast is on NewsChannel 9 at 5:00pm, we're going to give you a live, behind-the-scenes look at how a newscast comes together.  Right here on 9wsyr.com, and on our digital channel WSYR 9.2 (Time Warner Digital 890) you'll be able to see what most of you probably haven't seen before.  Tim Fox is going to take you on a tour of NewsChannel 9,  from the morning planning meeting, to editing and production, and what's really going on in the studio during the newscast.  We hope you'll check out what we are calling "NC9 Raw".  We highly recommend those of you with picture-in-picture, or with a computer in your living room, try to watch NewsChannel 9 @ 5:00-6, and NC9 Raw at the same time.  But we'd like your help.  If you have any questions about how things work, or why we do this or that, please let us know and we'll try to answer during Monday's show.  Thanks and see you Monday (tune in just before 5pm)!

Anyway we could get a panorama of the studio.

I've noticed that on the wide shots, it seems cramped, but with TV magic you can have Christie in front of the TMN monitor and Michael in the NYS glass wall.

Also, please go in depth with weather graphics production. (I love producing and watching things being produced)

Thanks.

I think its great, real interesting to see how much work it takes to put on the news cast. Its great to see the humans behind the scenes. It would be nice to periodically do this, Its great to hear the director and team call out the commands and see them
take shape. There is not really a need to always have a person narrating it, but
Tim Fox did a great job explaining it all.

Is there anyway we can do the same thing during the first week of December? I'd like to get it recorded onto my DVR. (Or you could post the video online)

Hey NC9,

I've known about your whole fancy "Digital Centralcasting" system for quite some time. With everyone's hatred of ClearChannel, they figured that ClearChannel was just merging everything into one. Although, Ackerley was the one who installed the system.

As I keep wondering why channel 50 in Watertown has gotten it's newscasts, I keep coming up with the same idea. Why not have NC9 produce two 1/2 hour newscasts for them that'll air at noon and 5pm. See it this way, for the noon newscast, it gets produced right after Bridge Street. Of course, we could outsource it even farther, and have segments from TMN, including Carrie's health cast and some stories. Figuring, without fitting all the commercials in, your pretty much taping 17 minutes of news. Of course them in the Watertown studios can take care of the weather. The only thing I see their though is their need for an upgrade of the weather system. They really need to upgrade it into a WSI system like what we have down here (even though I'm right on the border myself).

The reason channel 50 got rid of newscasts was because they weren't rated high enough, and ClearChannel didn't feel like tying up funds in the process. When Ackerley bought the station from Smith Media in 2000, I'm sure they had a much brighter future for the station, rather than leftover computers from WKTV in Utica (from the Smith era). Figure, if the #1 Syracuse station is producing newscasts for them, they should at least get close to WWNY-TV. Right now, they're not even in the race, because you kinda need newscasts. With this sudden rise in viewer ship, advertisers will be more tempted to advertise on WWTI (channel 50). With these increased funds, WWTI could get a set (If at all possible, something close to your guys'), newscasts graphics, and start producing their own TMN, Noon, 5-5:30-6pm, and 11@11 newscasts. I remember back when it was worth something to have your station in the CNYSG (Central New York Station Group). It seems to be all going downhill from WUTR's cancellation of newscasts, and eventual sale to the worst broadcasting company on the planet (Mission Broadcasting (frontface for Nexstar due to monopoly rules)).

Also, WIVT needs new graphics. Giant Octopuse did WHAM and WSYR's, why not due 50 and 34.
