  • Sick Kids

Are your kids sick, too? Wow...I can't wait until spring. It's amazing how we can function as parents on like, four interrupted hours of sleep. I have to admit I was eyeing that "banned" bottle of infant's Pediacare last night that I can't bring myself to throw out. (No I won't ever give it to any of the kids-- the FDA's new ruling warns against it for the littlest guys.) But I'll tell you, me and pediacare have great memories!  They say it doesn't really work for congestion anyway, but I swear it made them feel better...or maybe I felt better doing -something- for my little sick babies.  I bought the saline flush system I'm supposed to shove up my kids' nostrils to help...but I don't have the stamina to wrestle them down to do it. Spring can't come soon enough! (-:
  • New Years Resolution!

I can't seem to resist setting a New Year's resolution... can you?   It is perhaps the most guilt-ridden time of year as we self-evaluate everything we don't do well in our lives (thus, the guilt!) Then, when we don't abide by our resolutions, we find out how very well we can't stick to our plan to improve ourselves (more guilt!) which leads me to this year's resolution. I hereby resolve to get rid of the guilt! Mom-guilt:  I can't be at home all day with the kids, or at the special school event, or the Halloween parties...etc,etc,etc! Work-guilt: I do the best that I can in the time that I'm here. Personal guilt: I forgot the send the thank-you cards....there's nothing in the fridge for dinner...the baby hasn't gotten his flu shot...oops, I forgot: happy Birthday to my husband-- need I say more?  Life if precious. Life is GREAT! I am done spoiling things with guilt. Resolve to do the same, everyone! (-:  Happy New Year!

  • The Art of Looking Presentable

I remember when I was a young reporter, running into the ladies room to quick fix my hair...I witnessed a hard-working mommy reporter washing her hair in the dingy work sink. Newsflash: You're on TV, I told her. You must wash your hair, blow dry it, and spend at least a half-hour globbing on the make-up out of respect for our faithful viewers who don't want to look at a dishelved mess. Fast-forward 9 years...I have become her. Forget my morning coffee and newspaper:  I'm changing diapers, feeding, refereeing...loading, unloading-- you know the drill, right? I've also become somewhat savvy in looking put together while actually being all over the place. Here's my top 3 list for achieving this: (as often asked by viewers) #1) BIG JEWELRY (a good pair of dangle-y earrings or big honking necklace detracts from bags under your eyes. #2) Shiny lip-gloss(love it or hate it, it detracts from the bags under your eyes) and #3) A COMB(going WITH the bed-head lumps makes it look like you "MEANT to do that!" also detracts from the bags under your eyes. (-: Heeee Heee! TV is soooooo very glamorous!

  • "I Love It!" (Mark's Favorite Things)

I challenge all of you to come up with a  list of items that you “need” in your daily to weekly lives, it's actually quite an interesting task.   It was a bit surprising to me how tough it was to come up with something that is interesting versus the normal everyday items like car keys or a toothbrush.  What a wide range of items I have on my list, I'm not sure what they say about me, but on a daily basis they make me happy and help my life feel complete!

    1. Reusable Plastic Water Bottle:  It tops my list because I'm always carrying around water. We all know water is essential for life and for keeping a healthy body.  Our bodies are mostly made of water so for me, it is a key component to my health.  Also, using a hard plastic water bottle saves the environment so your not using the store bought bottles that create so much energy when they are made.

    2. Gym Pads/Gloves:  The gym is very important to my overall health and I love to exercise! Number two is something I use at the gym, my workout pads.  They give me a good grip on the weights and help protect my hands as well.

    3. Ipod: I love my music and Apple is the place to go if you love music like myself.  I listen to music everywhere from the gym to the car and in my home, love it!

    4. Lotions:  I recommend using lots of lotion all over your body!  It will keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.  I use eye firming cream (not name brand) for around the eyes, a glycolic acid face moisturizer for wrinkles, and finally try using a body moisturizer with oatmeal.  The oatmeal is excellent at holding in moisture and keeping your skin soft.

    5. Alarm Clocks (plural): With my crazy weekend schedule being on the morning and evening news I need to set three alarm clocks so I make sure I get up on time and bring you the latest weather on the weekend!

    6. Cookie Dough!:  Last on my list and oh so bad for me, I know Mom, but hey we all need our moment of pleasure, mine is with sugar!

  • "I Love It!" (Carrie's Favorite Things)

When Rick and Julie asked me to come on Bridge Street to talk about my favorite things, I started thinking about the products I use throughout the day.  My first favorite thing is what gets me started every morning; my new coffeemaker.  I recently bought a French Press.  All you do is put in ground coffee, pour hot water over it, and let it sit for 4 minutes and press.  It’s the best cup of coffee I’ve ever made at home.  One caveat, the coffee doesn’t stay hot in the glass carafe, so you have to be prepared to drink it right away.
After coffee and some exercise it’s time to get ready for work; that’s when I reach for my next favorite things.  I’ve been wearing Donna Karan Cashmere Mist perfume for as long as I can remember.   It’s a light, fresh scent that lasts all day because I also use the Cashmere Mist body crème and deodorant.
My hair is naturally curly and on the dry side, so I deep condition it with a product by Tigi called S Factor.  It makes my hair smooth and silky and smells like peppermint too!!
Speaking of peppermint, my next favorite thing is a peppermint scented lip gloss by Origins.  It comes in great colors and doesn’t feel sticky.
My favorite makeup product right now is an eye shadow that goes on the center of the lid to make your eyes stand out.  It’s by Chanel and the color is Apricot.
Finally, the little orange tubes of hand crème that I keep in my purse, desk, car, nightstand and in my kitchen.  Its Sally Hansen Hands Nails and Cuticles Crème.  It keeps my hands soft and prevents dry cuticles.  I buy them in plastic bins at the checkout at Wegmans.
What are some of your favorite things?  I’d love to hear about them!!!

  • "I Love It!" (Dan's Favorite Things)

I know if you caught Bridge Street on Tuesday, you already know more about me than you needed to know.  So, here are "a few of my favorite things..."

    # 1- My wife and children.  And to celebrate our family, we try to read at least a chapter or short story together every night.  Our current nightstand volume is "Holiday Treasury."  (A collection of Christmas stories from the library -- fantastic)

    # 2 - my 22 year old coffee mugs, from a long-forgotten gift shop on Cape Cod.  A hand-painted sunset graces this favorite of mine, and if you've got a coffee mug in almost daily use that lasts this long...it grows in value every day!  (I alternate this with my OTHER favorite coffee mug, the one that says "I Love My Dad."

    # 3- A 2006 Christmas gift which I HOPE lasts 22 years or more:  My lightweight fall and winter black jacket with the Cornell Big Red logo on it.  I've followed Cornell football and basketball since I was a kid in the very early 60's...and the love affair continues.  Look carefully for that jacket in the Cornell section at the Dome on 12/22.  It's the one game of the season where I'll root against the Orange.

    # 4 - Timex Marathon watch.  Marathon is the model name, but it fits:  there's a 27 lap function (among many others) which allows you to recall per-mile pace on a long run.  And the original battery is into its 4-th year now.  You can't kill it.

    # 5 - Crunchy peanut butter.  Every day.  Need I say more?

    # 6 - Q-Tip brand cotton swabs.  Accept no substitutes.

    # 7 - Sauce from Angotti's Family Restaurant.  The only brand name besides Q-Tip and Timex that I choose to proudly endorse.  I LOVE IT!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • "I Love It!" (Michael's Favorite Things)

Posted by Michael Riecke - My needs are simple, and so are my favorite things.  Trust me, I struggled to come with this list!  You won’t find any big surprises or helpful tips here.  My favorite things merely offer a glimpse into my not-so-glamorous existence!

#1.  It’s difficult for me to imagine life before the digital video recorder.  The DVR makes taping my favorite shows a cinch!  I wake-up at 3am to get ready for The Morning News, which means “Wheel of Fortune” is my late night TV. Without the DVR, I’d miss all of prime time shows!!!  (I could use a VCR, but the DVR is much more convenient.)

#2.  Numbers 3 and 4 will explain why I need number 2.  My iPod Nano makes that 5-mile trek on the treadmill bearable.  It’s loaded with my favorite tunes, which trick my brain into thinking exercise is fun.

#3.  Hot Dogs.  Yes, hot dogs.  I like them, and there’s nothing you can tell me regarding their contents that will change my mind.

#4.  Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.  I think they’re best when chilled and served with a tall glass of milk.  Yum.

#5.  I’ll end with something that puts a smile on my face, even when he’s bad: my goofy Boston Terrier Bobo.  He snores, smells and drools, but I love him all the same!

  • "I Love It!" (Julie's Favorite Things)

Posted by Julie - "A girl has needs, right ladies! And as a mom, mine starts with good non-messy fun on the run for the kids!

#1) my kids LOVE "Water Wow" art pads. The reusable pads come to life by simply applying water! (Wet wipes work great!) They dry and don't make a mess...great for the car, airport, doctor’s office, and fancy restaurants!

#2: Diaper rashes are the worst. I have tried every cream on the shelf and prescriptions that haven't worked. "Triple Paste" rocks my world (-: It's over the counter but any pharmacy will be able to special order it for you!

#3 I can't live without my Stanley Steamer brand carpet cleaner. From the kids mess, to the cat's...it really works! Spray it on, and without much effort, stains usually come right up.

#4) my favorite new mineral makeup is called Glo Minerals. I've tried several other brands, and they just don't offer the coverage I need.  I'm loving my Glo Minerals.

#5) Bumble and Bumble Thickening Shampoo, Conditioner, and Spray give my hair the volume it needs. I have super fine hair, and it's honestly the first hair product line I've ever used that truly makes a difference.

#6)  I love a good dipping oil for bread. This one is sooo fresh and unique and delicious that it finishes off my "things I love" list! (And it's local!) You must try Cheeky Monkey Foods Tomato Garlic dipping oil.  I believe it's made up on Marshall Street on the SU Hill. I buy mine at Patisserie Bakery in Skaneateles--when I can find it (it sells out!) Cheekymonkeyfoods.com. Enjoy!!!

  • "I Love It!" (Rick's Favorite Things)

Posted by Rick - The knife is for the small jobs that pop up like screwing and cutting... contacs to that I can see to screw and cut if I have trouble with the ones I have on.

The chocolate is for that burst of energy I need to keep up with Julie, she sucks the life out of me.

The cell phone is to keep in contact with the outside world in case I need to escape and the watch to show everyone I can tell time!
