October 5th brought ES-Ms record to an amazing 5-1. The loss against Mexico on Homecoming Night had the boys down for a while, but with a few hard practices and in spirit of their Senior Night, they came out with a victory on Friday.

In the first quarter, Matt Cushing started his game off with 15 yrd. touchdown, followed by another 5 yrd. touchdown, both completed by Dustin Moss' two successful field goal kicks.

With the score 14-0 and Spartans in the lead, Corey Gerace had a 28 yrd. run, and (returning from injury) Andy Heagle made a 37 yrd. field goal. At the end of the second quarter, Keyron Rhodes of Fowler had a 7 yrd. TD, the score, 17-6.

Quarterback Mick Letcher had a very successful throw in the 3rd quarter, which practically landed in Kyle Johnson's hands in the end zone to score the fourth touchdown of the game for East Syracuse- Minoa.

Cush had a 20 yrd. TD in the fourth quarter, but Moss kick was incomplete. Fowler managed to get another touchdown for themselves in the game. Ron Pugh ran 25 yards, pass from Frankie Dwyer. With only a few minutes left in the game, Emmett Baggett recovered Eric Bartosezk's punt at the 3 yrd. line and the Spartans ended their game with a score of 33-12.

The Tigers Upset The Spartans

Despite a rowdy crowd and fired up team, the East Syracuse Spartans had a tough upset against the Mexico Tigers on Friday night. Throughout the day, cheers of the Spartans echoed the halls at ES-M, until the 6:30 game which apparently had a sketchy outlook by the end of the first quarter.

A crowd of an estimated 2,500 gathered the stadium at ES-M, but were stunned to see what was happening to their undefeated team. This has been the first loss of a league game for the Spartans since 2005's play off loss to New Hartford. Matt Cushing managed to accumulate 185 yards on 25 carries, and quarterback Mick Letcher also had 189 passing yards during the Mexico game. The Tiger's were "the most physical team we've played this season," says Coach Deparde.

This week, senior night at the Spartans home is played against Fowler. Cushing says, "we've been working real hard this week." I'm sure the boys have learned what kinks to work out of the game to come up with a big win to get it back on Friday night.

A True Homecoming

Solvay. Ouch. That was the consensus of students when our Homecoming opponent was announced. One thing that students didn’t realize at the time was the true meaning of the game. The pride that comes with every hit, the tingle in your hands as you catch a pass, the snap in your wrist after you throw. Things like this make up the game for the players. The smell of popcorn in the hands of your little brother, the aw-inspiring moment of tension as the receiver locks his eyes on an incoming pass, the pain and anguish that pulses through your veins as the other team scores. Things like these make up a true fan’s mentality. Homecoming has always been a hopeful night; you feel a need to win for your school and for your self. Now, we realize that the true meaning is in the heart, the heart with which the payers and fans put their hopes on the edge. Even though we may have lost, badly, we still played with heart. We wanted to do our best on the night that mattered. We wanted to show the others that we actually can hold our own. We wanted to show ourselves that we were out there for something. And we did. I congratulate every player on the JE team, every dedicated fan that stayed to the end through rain and defeat, and every coach who encouraged the players to play till the end. You truely won on Homecoming night.

Friday night's home game at ESM, the Spartans racked up another win bringing their record to now 3-0. They've been ranked sixth in the state this week.

Friday night depended on a lot of defense from the Spartans; Emmett Baggett, Jeff Lamphier, Eric Cushing, Dillion Canorro, and Eric Bartoszek all contributed to their win.

First quarter ended with a score or 7-0, Chittenango in the lead.

In the second quarter, Matt Cushing scored both touchdowns. The second one was an intercepted Chittenango pass and Cushing ran for a 95-yard touchdown, and the Spartans were brought to the lead with the score 14-7.

The third and fourth quarters were both ESM's defense working it's hardest. The Spartans held the score where it stood. Final score ESM- 14 Chittenango- 7. This Friday, the boys play at Cortland.

This game could have very well given the team an idea about how they would do in winning League Champions.

Emmett Baggett ran the first play up the field to lead into Mick Letcher's first touchdown of the game. Fulton came back with another touchdown, then Letcher and Cushing both score two additional touchdowns along with Sophmore, Dustin Moss' succesful field goal, to end the first quarter with a score of 21-13, Spartans in the lead.

The second quarter was not as successful because of three incomplete passes which held the score where it stood.

Fulton scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, bringing them in the lead to 27-21. Fulton scored the second time with only a minute left on the clock.

At the start of the fourth quarter, running back, Matt Cushing made a flip into the end zone with the ball, contributing to Corey Gerace's first touchdown of the game bringing the score then to 28-27. As the Spartan crowd hyped up, the team knew they had to gain more of a lead to really close the game. With 10:30 left in the game, Fulton gets the ball and scores bringing the score to 28-33. Senior, Kyle Johnson intercepts a pass with less than 2 minutes in the game to go and with 43.7 seconds on the clock, "Cush" scored his third touchdown of the game. Final score: ESM- 34 Fulton- 33.

- contributed by Jennifer Lee

Nottingham Plays First Game On New Field

They've lost 11 senior starters who had been an asset to both the teams defense and offense, including Dayne Bennett, Sean Halligan, Nick Kolod, Jon Kravetz, Keith Norton, and Corey Marko. Still with the Spartans is quaterback Mick Letcher and lead running back Matt Cushing who Kevin Deparde is hoping to help things run just as smoothly as last year's season.

Friday night gained the Spartan's their first win against the Oswego Buccaneers with a final score of 40 to 12. The team didn't start out as aggressive as wanted having Oswego get the first touchdown in the second quarter, but with 21 yards ran by senior, Matt Cushing and 24 yards ran by new starting junior, Sahar Nero, the Spartans were able to gain back a lead. Sophomore, Dustin Moss made 4 field goal kicks. Matt Cushing accumulated 228 yards in his first game. Seniors, Emmett Baggett and Mick Letcher both also had touchdowns to contribute to the boys' win and Marcus Morris has a punt block in the fourth quarter. The Spartans next game is at ESM HS September 7th vs. Fulton.

- contributed by Jennifer Lee

Westhill Warriors "Class B" Favorites Again?

Westhill remains one of the favorites to win a sectional title in Class B. Last year, the Warriors made it all the way to the championship game before seeing their perfect season spoiled by Cazenovia.

Westhill faces a tough test right off the bat. The warriors take on Homer in Friday's season opener.
